Method
Cooking the Pasta

Boil the Macaroni
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and then add the elbow macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-9 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Making the Cheese Sauce
- 2
- 3
Make a Roux
Add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour to the melted butter. Stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux, ensuring it doesn't brown.
- 4
Add Milk
Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- 5
Incorporate Cheese and Seasonings
Once the sauce has thickened, reduce the heat to low. Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard powder. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combining and Baking

Mix Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is well coated.
- 7
Prepare for Baking
If using, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish.
- 8
Add Topping
In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of bread crumbs and 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the macaroni and cheese.
