Preparation
- 1
Heat water
Bring fresh, filtered water to a temperature just below boiling — about 175°F (80°C). If you don't have a thermometer, heat until steam rises and small bubbles form but before a full rolling boil (roughly 2–3 minutes after boiling begins).
- 2
Pre-warm teaware
Pour a small amount of the hot water into your teapot and teacup, swirl to warm the vessel, then discard the warming water. Pre-warming helps maintain infusion temperature.
Steeping
- 3
Measure tea
Place 2 teaspoons (about 2 g each teaspoon, total ~4 g) of loose green tea into the teapot infuser or tea infuser. For stronger or larger cups, increase by 1 teaspoon per additional 6 oz of water.
- 4
Pour water
Pour 12 oz (about 350 ml) of the heated water (≈175°F / 80°C) over the tea leaves in the infuser.
- 5
Steep time
Allow the tea to steep for 1.5–2.5 minutes. Steep for about 1.5 minutes for a lighter, more delicate flavor; up to 2.5 minutes for a fuller taste. Avoid steeping longer than 3 minutes to prevent bitterness and astringency.
- 6
Finishing
- 7
- 8
Serve immediately while warm. Green tea can be re-steeped 1–2 additional times using slightly hotter water and a slightly longer steep (add ~30 seconds to 1 minute per re-steep), depending on the leaf quality.
