Pasta

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil over high heat. Add 1 tsp of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Macaroni

Once the water is boiling, add 2 cups of macaroni. Stir occasionally and cook for about 8-10 minutes or until al dente. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to create a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.

  3. 5

    Pour in Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Cheeses and Spices

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup of cubed cream cheese, 1 tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of mustard powder. Mix until the cheese has melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining and Serving

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is evenly coated.

  2. 8

    Prepare Topping (if using)

If using, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese in a bowl.

  3. 9

    Serve

For a baked version, transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Otherwise, serve it creamy and hot straight from the pot.
