Method

Preparation of Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them thinly into rings. Aim for about 1/4 inch thickness for even frying.

  2. 2

    Soak the Onions

Place the sliced onions in a bowl of cold water and let them soak for about 30 minutes to reduce bitterness.

Batter Preparation

  1. 3

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

  2. 4

    Add Milk

Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, whisking continuously until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onions.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  2. 6

    Coat the Onions

Drain the soaked onions and pat them dry with paper towels. Dip the onion rings into the batter, ensuring they are well coated.

  3. 7

    Fry the Onions

Carefully place a few battered onion rings into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried onions and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels.

  4. 8

    Repeat

Continue frying the remaining onion rings in batches, making sure to maintain the oil temperature.
