Method

Pasta Cooking

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add spaghetti or rigatoni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned whole tomatoes (with juices) and crush them with a spoon.

  3. 6

    Season Sauce

Add chopped basil, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir well and let simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Meat Sauce Preparation (Optional)

  1. 7

    Cook Vegetables

In a separate skillet, add a little olive oil. Sauté chopped onion, carrot, and celery until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 8

    Brown Meat

Add ground beef or turkey to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.

  3. 9

    Combine with Marinara

If using, pour in red wine and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the meat mixture to the marinara sauce and let simmer together for an additional 10 minutes.

Final Assembly

  1. 10

    Combine Sauce and Pasta

Add the cooked pasta to the marinara sauce (or meat sauce if prepared) and toss until well coated.

  2. 11

    Serve

Serve hot, garnished with additional fresh basil or grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
