Pizza Dough and Toppings
Method
Preparation and Cooking
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, mix warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add olive oil, salt, and flour gradually, mixing until a dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- 2
Prepare the Sauce
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, dried oregano, black pepper, and sugar. Cook for about 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
- 3
Assemble the Pizza
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to fit a deep dish pizza pan. Press the dough into the pan, ensuring it goes up the sides. Layer half of the mozzarella cheese on the bottom, followed by the sauce, then the remaining mozzarella on top. If desired, add fresh basil.
- 4
Bake the Pizza
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
