Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter into the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shaping the Pretzels

  1. 5

    Divide Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.

  2. 6

    Shape Pretzels

Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches long) and shape it into a pretzel by forming a knot in the middle and twisting the ends.

Baking the Pretzels

  1. 7

    Prepare Baking Soda Solution

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

  2. 8

    Boil Pretzels

Carefully drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling solution for about 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 9

    Apply Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

  4. 10

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the pretzels for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Serving

  1. 11

    Prepare Dipping Sauces

Serve the warm pretzels with mustard, cheese sauce, and chocolate sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy!
