Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it's well chilled.

  2. 2

    Brew and cool espresso

Brew a single shot (about 1 oz) of espresso. Allow it to cool for 1–2 minutes so it’s hot but not scalding; you want warm or slightly cooled espresso to mix properly without melting too much ice.

  3. 3

    Measure ingredients

Measure 1.5 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz cooled espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Prepare about 1 cup of ice for the shaker.

Shake & strain

  1. 4

    Combine in shaker

Add the cooled espresso, vodka, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup to the cocktail shaker. Add enough ice to fill roughly two-thirds of the shaker (about 1 cup).

  2. 5

    Dry shake (optional for foam)

If you prefer a thicker crema/foam on top, first close the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds without ice (dry shake). This helps emulsify the espresso and liqueur.

  3. 6

    Wet shake

Add ice (if you did the dry shake, now add fresh ice) or proceed if ice is already in. Shake very hard for 15–20 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty. The vigorous shaking chills the drink and creates a silky foam from the espresso.

  4. 7

    Double strain

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer or discard the ice water. Using the shaker’s strainer and a fine mesh strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass to remove small ice chips and ensure a smooth appearance.

Garnish & serve

  1. 8

    Garnish

Gently place three whole coffee beans on the surface of the foam in a triangular pattern. This is the classic garnish symbolizing health, wealth, and happiness.

  2. 9

    Serve

Serve immediately while cold and the foam is fresh. Optionally provide a small napkin and a stir stick if desired.
