Spiced Adult Cocktail (makes 1 serving)
For a small batch (4 servings)
Method
Spiced Adult Cocktail (makes 1 serving)
- 1
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or shaker filled halfway with ice, pour 2 oz bourbon or rye, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, 0.25 oz maple syrup and add 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
- 3
Stir
Stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted—this integrates flavors and softens the alcohol edge.
- 4
- 5
Strain and garnish
Strain the stirred cocktail over the large ice cube. Express the oils from an orange peel by holding it skin-side down over the drink and giving it a quick twist; run the rim with the peel and drop it into the glass. Optionally, flame the expressed peel briefly with a lighter for a smoky orange aroma (hold a lit match or lighter near the peel and squeeze quickly), then discard if you prefer no flame.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of warmth from the whiskey, brightness from the vermouth and orange notes, and the maple sweetness.
