Cold Brew Concentrate

Method

Cold Brew Concentrate

1

Combine coffee and water

Measure 1 cup coarsely ground coffee and place it into a clean 1–2 quart container or jar. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Stir gently for 10–15 seconds to make sure dry pockets are wetted.

2

Steep

Cover the container loosely (lid or plastic wrap) and steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16 to 20 hours. Longer steep (up to 20 hours) yields a stronger, fuller-bodied concentrate; shorter yields a milder concentrate.

3

Strain

After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a clean pitcher. For clearer concentrate, strain a second time through a fresh filter. Press gently on grounds to extract liquid but avoid forcing bitter solids through.

4

Store

Transfer the cold brew concentrate to a sealed container and refrigerate. Concentrate will keep for up to 7–10 days chilled. This recipe makes roughly 3 to 4 cups of concentrate depending on extraction and pressing.

Finish & Serve

5

Prepare sweetened milk (optional)

If using simple syrup and flavored milk, stir 2 tablespoons simple syrup into 1 cup milk (or alternative) until combined. Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch (1/4 tsp) of sea salt if desired to enhance sweetness and mouthfeel.

6

Assemble iced cold brew

Fill a tall glass with 1/2 to 1 cup ice (adjust to preference). Pour 1 part cold brew concentrate to 1 part milk mixture or water to taste. Typical ratio: 1:1 concentrate to milk for a milk-forward drink, or 1:1 concentrate to water for a black cold brew. For a single serving, use about 4 ounces concentrate and 4 ounces milk/water.

7

Sweeten & serve

Taste and add more simple syrup to taste if desired. Stir gently and serve immediately. Optionally garnish with a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon, or a splash of cream for extra richness.

8

Scale & notes

To make multiple servings, dilute concentrate at the same 1:1 ratio or adjust to strength preference. Keep concentrate refrigerated and use within 7–10 days. Use filtered water and freshly roasted coffee for best flavor.
