Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Infusing the Flavors

In a medium saucepan, combine the anise seeds, star anise, and fennel seeds with 4 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

  2. 2

    Simmering

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. This will extract the flavors from the spices.

  3. 3

    Straining

After 30 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large bowl to remove the solid spices.

  4. 4

    Dissolving the Sugar

Add 2 cups of sugar to the strained liquid while it is still warm. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

  5. 5

    Combining with Alcohol

Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then add 2 cups of neutral spirit (vodka or grain alcohol) and stir well to combine.

  6. 6

    Flavoring with Coffee (Optional)

If desired, add 10 whole coffee beans to the mixture for an additional flavor dimension.

  7. 7

    Bottling

Pour the finished Sambuca into clean glass bottles, seal them tightly, and store them in a cool, dark place.

  8. 8

    Aging (Optional)

For best flavor, let the bottles sit for at least 2 weeks before consuming. This allows the flavors to meld together.
