Method
Cheeses
Bring cheeses to temperature
Remove all cheeses from the refrigerator 30–60 minutes before serving so their flavors and textures open up. Keep them on their rinds/packaging until ready to place on the board.
Portion cheeses
Leave a few larger pieces intact for presentation. Pre-slice or crumble a portion of each cheese to make them easy to access: cut cheddar into 1/4" slices or small cubes; slice Brie in a wedge and leave the wheel intact with a serving knife; crumble the blue cheese into a small pile; shape the goat cheese into a log or slice into coins.
Accompaniments - Fruit & Nuts
Prepare dried fruit and nuts: drain any syrupy packaging. If figs are large, halve them. Arrange dried apricots and figs in small clusters for visual interest.
Prepare fresh fruit: wash grapes and leave on stems or make small bunches; core and thinly slice apples or pears just before serving to avoid browning (brush lightly with lemon juice if preparing early).
If desired, lightly toast walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat 3–4 minutes until fragrant, stirring frequently; cool completely before placing on board.
Breads & Crackers
Arrange crackers in small stacks or fanned out for variety. Keep some cracker space free so guests can reach cheeses easily.
Condiments & Extras
Spoon fig jam and whole-grain mustard into small bowls or ramekins. Set honey in a small jar or pour into a narrow dish for easy drizzling.
Place olives in a small dish and garnish condiments with a sprig of rosemary or thyme.
Assembly & Presentation
Choose a large wooden board or slate. Start by positioning the cheeses spaced evenly across the board to create anchor points.
Fill gaps with clusters of dried fruit, fresh fruit bunches, and nuts. Fan crackers and bread slices around the edges and between cheeses so guests can easily reach them. Keep crumbs minimal for a tidy presentation.
Garnish with fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs for color and aroma. Provide separate knives or spreaders for each cheese and small spoons for condiments.
Label cheeses if desired, and serve immediately once cheeses have reached room temperature. Replenish items as they are eaten.
