Method
Syrup (Homemade Old Fashioned syrup)
- 1
Make syrup
Combine 0.5 cup granulated sugar and 0.5 cup water in a small saucepan. Add the strip of orange peel (avoid white pith). Warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture just comes to a simmer (about 3–5 minutes). Do not boil vigorously. Remove from heat.
- 2
While the syrup is still warm, stir in 4 dashes of Angostura bitters and let the orange peel steep for 10–15 minutes to infuse oils and aromatics.
- 3
Remove the orange peel and let the syrup cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean jar or bottle, seal, and refrigerate. Syrup will keep 2–3 weeks refrigerated.
Cocktail
- 4
Prepare glass
Place a large ice cube (or several if you prefer) into an Old Fashioned / rocks glass.
- 5
Build the cocktail
Add 0.5 oz of the Homemade Old Fashioned syrup to the glass, then add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Pour in 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon.
- 6
Stir
Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 turns) to chill and properly dilute the drink — you want slight dilution and a silky texture.

Garnish & finish
Express the oils from an orange twist over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm bend so oils spray onto the surface. Rub the twist around the rim and drop it into the glass along with one Luxardo cherry. Serve immediately over the large ice cube.
