Method
Coffee base
- 1
Measure & heat water
Measure 0.5 cups (120 ml) of filtered water. Heat to 195–205°F (about just off boil). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil then let sit 30 seconds.
- 2
Weigh & grind beans
Weigh 10–12 g of coffee beans (approx. 0.06 cups by volume). Grind to a medium-coarse consistency (slightly coarser than table salt). If using preground, use a grind suitable for drip or pour-over.
- 3
Bloom
Place the ground coffee in your brew device (pour-over, French press, Aeropress, or a small drip cone). Start by pouring just enough hot water to wet the grounds (about 30–40 ml). Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2.
- 4
Brew
After bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water in a circular motion to fully saturate grounds, taking about 1–1.5 minutes total pour time for a small brew. Allow coffee to finish dripping or steep for an additional 30–60 seconds depending on device. Total contact time should be roughly 2–3 minutes for pour-over / 3–4 minutes for French press.
- 5
Pour & serve
Once brewing is complete, pour coffee into a warmed cup. If using a French press, press the plunger down slowly and pour immediately.
Grind & prep
- 6
Rinse any paper filter with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the brew vessel. If you used the optional coarse salt, discard and rinse thoroughly. Preheating helps maintain brew temperature.
