Flan Base

Caramel

Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

Increase heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Allow it to cook until it turns a golden amber color, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 3

Immediately pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden.

Flan Preparation

  1. 4

    Blend the Flan Ingredients

In a blender, combine 4 large eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well mixed.

  2. 5

    Pour Mixture into the Pan

Pour the blended flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the cake pan.

  3. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan pan inside a larger baking dish and fill the outer dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan pan.

  4. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  5. 8

    Cool and Refrigerate

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.

  6. 9

    Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan, then invert it onto a serving plate. The caramel will flow over the top. Slice and enjoy!
