Fried Green Tomato Ingredients

Method

Fried Green Tomato Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Tomatoes

Wash and slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Sprinkle both sides with salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out moisture.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, whisk the eggs and buttermilk together. In a third bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 3

    Bread the Tomatoes

Dredge each tomato slice in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into the egg and buttermilk mixture, then coat with the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to adhere.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking.

  5. 5

    Fry the Tomatoes

Carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
