Method
Coffee base
Brew strong coffee
Place 1.5 cups coarsely ground strong dark roast coffee (or equivalent in espresso) into a French press or coffee filter. Pour 2 cups boiling water over the grounds, stir gently, and steep for 4–5 minutes for French press (or brew according to your method to yield about 1.75–2 cups strong coffee).
Press or strain the coffee to separate grounds. While the coffee is still hot, add 6 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Stir until the condensed milk and sugar are completely dissolved into the hot coffee, tasting and adjusting sweetness if desired. Let the sweetened coffee cool to room temperature (about 15–20 minutes) or speed the process by placing the pot in an ice bath for 5–8 minutes.
Once cooled, transfer the sweetened coffee to the refrigerator and chill for at least 20–30 minutes until cold. You can prepare the coffee base ahead and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
Finishing & serve
Fill two tall glasses with ice cubes (about 1/2 cup ice per glass). Divide the chilled sweetened coffee between the glasses (about 3/4 cup coffee per glass).
Garnish with a light sprinkle (about 1 teaspoon) of crushed roasted peanuts or rest a cinnamon stick on the rim (both optional). Serve immediately with a straw or spoon for stirring.
