Cocktail Base

Method

Prepare Glass and Ice

  1. 1

    Chill or add ice

If you prefer a slightly colder presentation, chill your lowball (Old Fashioned) glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. Alternatively, place a single large ice cube or sphere in the glass now so the cocktail will be poured over it.

Build and Stir

  1. 2

Add 2 oz bourbon or rye, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters (plus 1 dash orange bitters, if using) into a mixing glass filled about two‑thirds with ice.

  2. 3

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (the mixing glass should form slight frost on the outside and the spirit should taste smoother).

  3. 4

If you used a separate mixing glass, strain the chilled cocktail over the single large ice cube in your prepared lowball glass. If you built directly in the serving glass, leave the ice you originally placed and gently stir once or twice to integrate.

Garnish and Finish

  1. 5

Use a peeler or small knife to cut a 1½–2 inch strip of orange peel. Hold it over the glass with the outer peel facing down and give it a quick firm twist to express the oils over the surface of the drink, then rub the peel around the rim if desired.

  2. 6

Drop the expressed peel into the glass as garnish. Serve immediately.
