Method
Espresso Base
- 1
Prepare a double espresso (about 60 ml) using freshly ground espresso beans and your espresso machine. If you do not have an espresso machine, brew a strong 60 ml concentrate using an Aeropress or very strong pour-over. Pour brewed espresso into your serving mug and set aside to stay hot.
Blue Latte Mixture
- 2
Dissolve Spirulina
In a small heatproof bowl, combine 2 tablespoons hot water with 1 teaspoon blue spirulina powder. Stir briskly until fully dissolved and no dry clumps remain. This creates an evenly colored liquid base for the milk.
- 3
Warm and Sweeten Milk
Pour 1 cup whole milk into a small saucepan and warm over medium-low heat until steaming but not boiling (about 60–65°C / 140–150°F). Whisk in the dissolved spirulina mixture, 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup, and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar until fully incorporated and the milk turns an even vibrant blue. Continue to whisk for 30–45 seconds to create slight froth.
- 4
If you prefer an iced version: combine the blue mixture with 1 cup of ice in a blender and pulse once or twice to chill and lightly froth, or cool the milk completely and refrigerate briefly before assembling.
Finishing & Garnish
- 5
- 6
Top with 2 tablespoons coconut cream or lightly frothed milk for a creamy dollop. If desired, dust a small amount (about 1/4 teaspoon) of edible silver or blue dust over the top for shimmer.
- 7
For an iced Java Blue Mug: Fill a glass with 1 cup ice, pour the prepared chilled blue milk over the ice, then slowly add the espresso so it forms a layered look. Finish with coconut cream dollop and dusting if desired.
- 8
Serve immediately. Stir before drinking to combine espresso and blue milk if you prefer a uniform color and flavor.
