Method
Prepare the Molten Center
- 1
Melt Chocolate and Butter
In a medium saucepan, combine the dark chocolate and unsalted butter. Melt over low heat, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
Make the Cake Batter
- 2
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- 3
- 4
Incorporate Boiling Water
Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and well combined. The batter will be thin.
Combine and Bake
- 5
Prepare Baking Pans
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Dust with cocoa powder to prevent sticking.
- 6
Layer the Batter
Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pans. Then, spoon the melted chocolate and butter mixture evenly over the batter in both pans. Finally, pour the remaining batter on top, ensuring the molten center is covered.
- 7
Bake the Cake
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the edges comes out clean, while the center remains soft. Do not overbake.
- 8
Cool and Serve
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then carefully invert onto a wire rack. Let cool for an additional 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
