Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparation of Cheese
Cut the Mozzarella
Cut the mozzarella cheese into thick slices, about 1-inch wide.
Breading Process
Prepare the Breading
In a shallow bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
Coat the Cheese
Dip each mozzarella slice first into the egg wash, then into the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Repeat for all slices.
Cooking the Mozzarella Bricks
Heat Oil
In a large skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until hot.
Fry the Cheese
Carefully add the breaded mozzarella slices to the hot oil, cooking in batches if necessary. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Drain Excess Oil
Once cooked, remove the mozzarella bricks from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Making the Marinara Sauce
Simmer Sauce
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and let simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
Finish with Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Serving
Plate the Dish
Serve the crispy mozzarella bricks hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
