Method

Sushi Rice Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a pot, combine rinsed sushi rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Microwave for 30 seconds until sugar dissolves. Fold this mixture into the cooked rice gently while fanning to cool it down.

California Roll Assembly

  1. 4

    Prepare the Vegetables

Cut the cucumber and avocado into thin strips. Set aside.

  2. 5

    Assemble the Roll

Lay a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands and spread a layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Layer cucumber, avocado, and crab meat in the center of the rice.

  3. 6

    Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly from the bottom to the top, applying gentle pressure. Seal the edge with a little water.

Frying the Sushi

  1. 7

    Prepare for Frying

Slice the assembled sushi rolls into bite-sized pieces. Set up a breading station with panko bread crumbs in one bowl and a beaten egg in another.

  2. 8

    Bread the Sushi

Dip each sushi piece into the egg, then coat it with panko bread crumbs, pressing lightly to adhere.

  3. 9

    Fry the Sushi

In a deep pan, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the sushi pieces in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Yum Yum Sauce Preparation

  1. 10

    Mix the Sauce

In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sugar, garlic powder, paprika, and water. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
