Ingredients for Braised Lamb Bao Bun

Method

Directions for Braised Lamb Bao Bun

  1. 1

    Prepare the Lamb

Trim any excess fat from the lamb shoulder and cut it into large chunks.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Lamb

In a large bowl, combine the lamb chunks with soy sauce, hoisin sauce, minced garlic, minced ginger, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight in the refrigerator.

  3. 3

    Braised the Lamb

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add the marinated lamb along with the marinade. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 2-3 hours until the lamb is tender and easily shredded.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Bao Buns

While the lamb is braising, steam the bao buns according to package instructions until fluffy and warm. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Garnishes

Thinly slice the cucumber and chop the cilantro for garnishing the bao buns.

  6. 6

    Assemble the Bao Buns

Once the lamb is tender, shred it using two forks. Place a generous amount of shredded lamb inside each bao bun. Top with sliced cucumber and chopped cilantro. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve the braised lamb bao buns warm with any remaining sauce drizzled on top.
