Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Place a large old-fashioned glass in the freezer for 5 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or pint glass, add the Montenegro Amaro, sweet vermouth, bourbon (or rye), orange bitters, Angostura bitters, and simple syrup.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to reach near the top). Using a bar spoon, stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 revolutions) until the mixture is well-chilled, slightly diluted, and slightly viscous.

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

If you chilled the serving glass in the freezer, remove it. If you used ice and water to chill, empty the glass and discard the water. Add 1–2 large ice cubes to the chilled old-fashioned glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube(s).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it with the outer (colored) side facing down above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils. Run the peel around the rim if desired, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of Montenegro's herbal bitterness, vermouth sweetness, and the backbone of whiskey.
