Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel and slice the large onions into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Cold Water

Gradually add cold water to the dry mixture, stirring gently until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off before placing it into the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-4 minutes.

  4. 7

    Drain and Season

Remove the fried onion rings using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with paprika (if using) and additional salt to taste.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Immediately

Enjoy the onion rings hot and crispy, with your favorite dipping sauce.
