Preparing the Steak

Prepare the Steak
Cut the round steak into serving-size pieces, about 3-4 ounces each. Tenderize the meat with a meat mallet until it's about 1/2 inch thick.

Season the Steak
Season both sides of the steak pieces with salt and black pepper.

Batter the Steak
In a shallow dish, pour the buttermilk. In another dish, combine the flour with a pinch of salt and pepper. Dip each piece of steak in the buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, coating well. Set aside.

Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.

Whisk in the cup of flour and cook, stirring continuously, for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns golden brown.

Make the Gravy
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Continue to cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
