Prepare the Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until well combined without overworking the meat.

Form the Patty
Shape the mixture into a round patty, about 1/2 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.
Cook the Patty

Cook the Patty
Place the patty on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the patty and cook for another 3-4 minutes, adding the cheddar cheese on top during the last minute to melt.
Assemble the Burger

Prepare the Bun
While the patty is cooking, slice the burger bun in half and toast it lightly if desired.

Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard on the bottom half of the bun.

Place the cooked patty with melted cheese on the bottom bun. Top with lettuce and a slice of tomato.
