Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic to prepare for cooking.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 3

    Add Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the pot and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 4

    Brown the Meat

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef and ground pork. Cook until browned, breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

  4. 5

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the red wine and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until the wine reduces slightly.

  5. 6

    Add Tomatoes and Broth

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef broth. Mix well to combine all ingredients.

  6. 7

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and fresh basil leaves to the pot. Stir to incorporate the spices evenly.

  7. 8

    Simmer

Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the sauce simmer for at least 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve the Bolognese

Once the sauce has thickened and flavors have melded, serve over your favorite pasta and garnish with additional basil if desired.
