Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  2. 2

    Drain and Set Aside

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of pasta water for later use if needed.

Sausage Mixture Preparation

  1. 3

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 4

    Add Vegetables

Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened. Stir in the minced garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for an additional minute.

  3. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Stir to combine and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  4. 6

    Combine with Spaghetti

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sausage mixture in the skillet. Toss well to combine, adding reserved pasta water as needed to achieve a desired sauce consistency.

  5. 7

    Finish and Serve

Remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil and half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Serve hot, garnished with the remaining Parmesan cheese.
