Meat Sauce
Method
Prepare the Meat Sauce
- 1
Sauté the Aromatics
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
- 2
Cook the Meat
Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking the meat apart with a spatula, about 8-10 minutes.
- 3
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Prepare the Cheese Mixture
- 4
Mix the Cheese
In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Mix until well blended and set aside.
Assemble the Lasagna
- 5
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 6
Layer Ingredients
In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread half of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layers, ending with a final layer of noodles topped with the remaining meat sauce.
- 7
Add Cheese Topping
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese on top of the final layer.
Bake the Lasagna
- 8
Cover and Bake
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
- 9
Uncover and Finish Baking
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Let the lasagna cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
