Method

Preparation

  1. 1

Peel and slice the red onions into thin rings. Aim for uniform thickness to ensure even cooking.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sautéing the Onions

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the sliced onions and sauté for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until they become soft and translucent.

  2. 3

    Adding the Balsamic Mixture

In a small bowl, mix together the balsamic vinegar, honey, salt, and black pepper. Pour this mixture over the sautéed onions in the skillet.

  3. 4

    Simmering

Reduce the heat to low and let the onions simmer in the balsamic mixture for about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally until the onions are caramelized and the liquid has reduced to a syrupy consistency.

  4. 5

    Finishing Touch

Add the fresh thyme to the skillet, stirring it in to combine with the onions. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Serving

  1. 6

Remove from heat and let the balsamic onions cool slightly. Transfer them to a jar for storage or serve warm as a topping for meats, cheeses, or salads.
