Coffee Base

Method

Coffee Base

  1. 1

    Measure beans

Measure 0.375 cups (about 30–34 grams) of naturally decaffeinated East African whole-bean coffee. This quantity yields approximately two 8-oz servings of brewed coffee.

  2. 2

    Grind beans

Grind the beans to a medium grind appropriate for pour-over or drip brewing. Aim for even particle size similar to granulated sugar. If using pre-ground decaf, skip this step.

  3. 3

    Heat water

Bring 2 cups (480 ml) of filtered water to just off boil — about 200°F (93°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

  4. 4

    Prepare filter and rinse

Place a paper filter into your pour-over cone or machine basket and rinse it with hot water to eliminate papery taste and preheat the brewer. Discard rinse water.

  5. 5

    Bloom

Place the ground coffee in the filter. Pour enough hot water (about 1/3 cup / 80 ml) to fully saturate grounds and allow coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped CO2 and improves extraction.

  6. 6

    Continue brewing

After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water in steady concentric circles (if pour-over) or start the drip cycle on your machine, aiming for a total brew time of 3 to 4 minutes. Adjust pour speed or grind size to reach this time: coarser equals faster, finer equals slower.

  7. 7

    Finish brew

Allow all water to pass through the grounds. Remove the filter with spent grounds and discard.

Serve & Customize

  1. 8

    Serve black

Pour the brewed decaf EA coffee into two warmed 8-oz cups (about 1 cup / 240 ml per cup). Taste and enjoy as-is to appreciate natural origin flavors (bright citrus, tea-like acidity, floral notes common to East African beans).

  2. 9

    Add milk or sweetener (optional)

If desired, heat 1/4 cup milk or milk alternative and add 1 tsp simple syrup (or sweetener to taste) to one or both cups. Stir gently to combine.

  3. 10

    Garnish (optional)

Sprinkle a light dusting (about 1/8 tsp) of ground cinnamon or cocoa powder on top for aroma and visual appeal.

  4. 11

    Storage note

Store remaining whole-bean naturally decaffeinated coffee in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Grind fresh for best flavor.
