Method
Coffee Base
- 1
Grind beans
Measure 0.033 cups (~6 g) whole dark roast beans and grind to a medium-fine consistency for a strong pour-over or Aeropress extraction. If using pre-ground, use espresso/fine for the espresso portion and medium-fine for the brewed portion.
- 2
Brew concentrated coffee
Heat 250 ml filtered water to 92–96°C (198–205°F). Brew the ground dark roast using a pour-over, Aeropress, or small French press to produce a strong 250 ml cup. Aim for a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio for a bold cup. Total brew time ~2.5–3.5 minutes. Set aside and keep warm.
Espresso Shot (concentrated portion)
- 3
Prepare espresso
Grind 0.018 cups (~10 g) of the dark roast to espresso-fine. Tamp firmly into portafilter and pull a single short espresso shot (about 30 ml) at 9–11 bars, extraction time ~25–30 seconds. If you don’t have an espresso machine, brew 30 ml very concentrated coffee using Aeropress inverted method (use 10 g coffee, 30 ml water, 60–90s steep) and press.
- 4
Combine for 'Diesel' effect
Pour the 30 ml espresso into the prepared strong 250 ml brewed coffee to create the layered, diesel-like intensity: a strong base with a punch of espresso.
Milk & Foam
- 5
Heat and texture milk
Pour 120 ml whole milk (plus additional 30 ml if you want extra microfoam) into a pitcher. Steam or heat to 60–65°C (140–149°F). While heating, introduce air at the start for a second or two to create microfoam, then submerge wand to create silky texture. If no steamer, heat milk gently on stovetop and whisk vigorously or use a milk frother to produce microfoam.
- 6
Sweetener & Flavor (optional)
- 7
If you prefer a subtly sweet or spiced profile, stir 15 ml dark brown sugar syrup and 1 tsp vanilla paste/extract into the brewed coffee before adding milk. Add a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) sea salt if desired to amplify chocolate notes. Taste and adjust sweetness to preference.
Finishing
- 8
Spoon a light layer of microfoam on top and dust with 1/2 tsp cocoa powder or grated dark chocolate. Serve immediately in a 12–14 oz cup so the beverage keeps its strong, roasty character.
