Sushi Rice

Filling

Nori and Toppings

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine mesh sieve, rinse 1 cup of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

Place the rinsed rice and 1.5 cups of water in a rice cooker or a pot. If using a pot, bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 18-20 minutes until water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

Once cooked, transfer the rice to a large bowl. Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved, then gently fold into the rice. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Prepare Filling

  1. 4

    Prepare Tuna

Slice the fresh tuna into thin strips, about 1/2 inch wide.

  2. 5

    Prepare Avocado

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh out with a spoon. Slice the avocado into thin strips.

Assemble Sushi Roll

  1. 6

    Lay Out Nori

Place a nori sheet shiny side down on a bamboo sushi mat.

  2. 7

    Spread Rice

Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Place strips of tuna and avocado in a line across the center of the rice.

  4. 9

    Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, start rolling the sushi tightly from the bottom. Roll towards the edge without rice, using the mat to shape it.

  5. 10

    Seal the Roll

Wet the top edge of the nori with a bit of water to seal the roll.

  6. 11

    Slice the Roll

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 8 equal pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to keep it clean.

  7. 12

    Sprinkle Sesame Seeds

Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top of the roll for added flavor and garnish.

Serve

  1. 13

    Plate the Sushi

Arrange the sushi pieces on a serving plate. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi on the side.
