Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Ingredients

Gather all ingredients. If using optional ingredients like mustard, tomato slices, or pickles, have them ready on a plate.

  2. 2

    Butter the Bread

Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. This will be the outer side that gets grilled.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Assemble the Sandwich

Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Layer one slice of American cheese on top. If using, add Dijon mustard, tomato slices, and pickles to taste. Top with the second slice of American cheese, and then place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.

  2. 4

    Grill the Sandwich

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once hot, place the assembled sandwich in the pan. Grill for about 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.

  3. 5

    Flip and Cook

Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula. Grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.

Serving

  1. 6

    Slice and Serve

Once both sides are golden and the cheese has melted, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Let it cool for a minute, then slice it in half. Serve warm with your choice of sides.
