Method

For the Mozzarella Sticks

  1. 1

    Prepare the Cheese

Freeze the mozzarella sticks for at least 30 minutes to firm them up. This helps prevent them from melting too quickly while frying.

  2. 2

    Set Up the Breading Station

In a shallow bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second shallow bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, combine the bread crumbs, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 3

    Bread the Mozzarella Sticks

Take each frozen mozzarella stick and coat it in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, then roll it in the seasoned bread crumbs. For extra crunch, you can double dip by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a breadcrumb – if it bubbles, it’s ready.

  5. 5

    Fry the Mozzarella Sticks

Carefully place a few breaded mozzarella sticks into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

For the Marinara Sauce

  1. 6

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Be careful not to burn it.

  2. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Add the canned crushed tomatoes to the saucepan along with oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir well to combine.

  3. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add fresh basil just before serving, if desired.
