Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until well blended. Gradually add cold sparkling water, stirring until you achieve a smooth batter.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, it's ready.

  2. 4

    Dip the Onions

Take each onion ring, dip it into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off.

  3. 5

    Fry the Rings

Gently place the battered onion rings into the hot oil. Fry them in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  4. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your choice of dressing or dipping sauce.
