Method

Preparing Spaetzle

  1. 1

    Cook Spaetzle

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaetzle and cook according to package instructions, usually about 3-5 minutes until they float to the surface. Drain and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Prepare the Roux

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly and lightly golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 4

    Incorporate Cheeses

Reduce heat to low and add Muenster, Swiss, and Parmesan cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 5

    Combine Spaetzle and Cheese Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked spaetzle and cheese sauce. If using, add your choice of meat (bacon, sausage, or chicken) and mix well.

  2. 6

    Bake (Optional)

For a baked version, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, top with additional cheese if desired, and bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
