Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Water
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.
- 2
Cook the Elbow Macaroni
Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 3
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.
Making the Cheese Sauce
- 4
- 5
Add Flour
Once melted, add the all-purpose flour to the pot and whisk continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.
- 6
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk to the roux while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
- 7
Add Cheese and Seasoning
Add the cheddar cheese, salt, and black pepper to the thickened mixture. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combining Pasta and Sauce

Mix Together
Add the drained elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
- 9
Serve or Prepare for Baking
You can serve the mac and cheese as is, or transfer it to a baking dish and top with bread crumbs and paprika for a crunchy topping.
