Method

Preparing the Patty

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties, about 3/4 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patties

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on one side, until browned. Flip the patties and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes for medium doneness.

  3. 3

    Add Cheese

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss-American cheese on each patty. Cover with a lid to help melt the cheese.

Preparing the Toppings

  1. 4

    Slice the Vegetables

While the patties are cooking, slice the tomato and onion into rings. Rinse the lettuce leaves and pat dry.

  2. 5

    Prepare Pickles

Get your pickle slices ready for assembly.

Assembling the Cheeseburger

  1. 6

    Toast the Buns (Optional)

If desired, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until lightly browned.

  2. 7

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, onion rings, and pickle slices. Top with the other half of the bun.
