Animal Fries
Method
Preparation
Prepare the French Fries
Cook the frozen French fries according to the package instructions until golden and crispy. This usually takes about 20-25 minutes in an oven.
Prepare the Onion Strings
While the fries are cooking, slice the onion into thin rings. Soak the onion rings in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to tenderize them.
Coat the Onion Rings
In a large bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk and coat them in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess flour.
Fry the Onion Strings
In a deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated onion rings in batches. Fry them until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Assemble the Animal Fries
Once the fries are done, remove them from the oven and place them on a serving platter. Top the fries with the fried onion strings and sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top.
Melt the Cheese
To melt the cheese, place the assembled fries under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning, until the cheese is bubbly and melted.
Serve
Serve the Animal Fries immediately while hot, garnished with any additional toppings you like such as chopped green onions or a drizzle of ranch dressing.
