Cocktail Base

For Making Ahead / Kit Extras (optional)

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Combine Base Ingredients

In a pitcher or bowl, pour 6 oz vodka, 12 oz tomato juice and 1 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice. Whisk to combine until homogeneous.

  2. 2

    Season

Add 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp prepared horseradish, 6 dashes hot sauce, 1 tsp celery salt, 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper and 1 tsp smoked paprika (if using). Whisk thoroughly and taste. Adjust hot sauce, horseradish or Worcestershire to preference — the kit is purposely bold so guests can add more to taste.

  3. 3

    Bottle For Kit Use

If assembling as a kit, funnel the mixed cocktail base into a small glass bottle (the quantities above make approximately 20 oz; adjust bottle size for number of servings). Seal and refrigerate until ready to serve. Label with 'Shake before use' and suggested serving ratio (3 oz mix to 1 oz vodka if you prefer a pre-spiked option, or 4 oz mix + 1 oz vodka for a stronger drink).

Rim & Garnish

  1. 4

    Prepare Rim Mix

On a small plate, combine 1 tablespoon coarse salt with 1 teaspoon celery salt and spread out evenly.

  2. 5

    Rim Glasses

Run a lemon wedge around the rim of each serving glass to moisten. Dip the rim into the salt mixture, twisting to coat evenly. Set glasses aside.

  3. 6

    Prepare Garnishes

Arrange 2 trimmed celery stalks, 6 olives on a cocktail pick, 6 pickled green beans or asparagus (if using), and 2 cooked bacon strips (if using) on a small tray. Keep extra lemon wedges and ice available for guests.

  4. 7

    Assemble Individual Cocktail

To serve one cocktail: fill a rimmed highball or pint glass with 1/2 to 1 cup ice (about 4–8 oz by volume). If kit base is unspiked: pour 3 oz vodka into the glass, then add 4 oz of the tomato base mixture (or combine 1 oz vodka + 3–4 oz mix if using pre-spiked mix). Gently stir once to combine.

  5. 8

    Garnish and Finish

Garnish with a celery stalk, a skewer of 3 olives, a pickled vegetable and a lemon wedge on the rim. Optionally rest a cooked bacon strip across the top. Serve with a small straw and a note suggesting extra hot sauce, horseradish or Worcestershire on the side for guests to tailor their drink.

For Making Ahead / Kit Extras (optional)

  1. 9

Pack the pre-mixed cocktail base, rim salt in a small airtight container, garnishes on a separate tray or sealed bag, and a small bottle of hot sauce and Worcestershire for add-ins. Keep ice and extra lemon wedges stored separately and chilled. Provide simple instructions for recipient: 'Shake bottle, rim glass with lemon and salt, fill glass with ice, combine 3 oz vodka + 4 oz mix (or 1 oz vodka + 3–4 oz mix if using pre-spiked), stir, garnish to taste.'
