Form the Patties
In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and gently shape each portion into a half-pound patty. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

Add Cheese (Optional)
If adding cheese, place the slices on top of the patties during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

Toast the Buns
While the patties are cooking, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

Serve
Serve the burgers with kettle chips or French fries on the side.
