Filling Ingredients
Grape Leaves and Cooking Liquid
Method
Preparation of Filling
- 1
Rinse and Soak Rice
Rinse the long grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
- 2
Prepare the Filling Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained rice, finely chopped onion, parsley, dill, chopped tomato, olive oil, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
Stuffing the Grape Leaves
- 3
Prepare Grape Leaves
Carefully separate the grape leaves, and trim the stems if needed. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess salt.
- 4
Stuff the Leaves
Lay a grape leaf flat on a clean surface, vein side up. Place about 1 tablespoon of the filling at the base of the leaf. Fold the sides over the filling, then roll from the base to the tip to form a tight roll. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
Cooking the Stuffed Grape Leaves
- 5
Arrange in Pot
Place the stuffed grape leaves seam side down in a large pot. Layer them tightly, as they will expand while cooking.
- 6
Add Cooking Liquid
Pour the vegetable broth or water into the pot, ensuring the grape leaves are just covered. Place lemon slices on top.
- 7
Cook
Cover the pot and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cook for about 40-45 minutes, until the rice is tender and the leaves are cooked through.
