1. Prepare the Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the mashed black beans, grated carrot, chopped bell pepper, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. If using, add the beaten egg to the mixture. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
2. Form the Patties
Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.
3. Cook the Patties
