Method
Matcha Concentrate
- 1
Sift and measure
Sift 2 tsp (to avoid clumps) of ceremonial-grade matcha powder into a small, dry bowl or matcha bowl (chasen bowl). Sifting produces a smoother latte.
- 2
Add hot water
Pour 90 ml hot water (about 80°C / 175°F) over the sifted matcha. Water should be just below boiling to preserve the delicate flavor and prevent bitterness.
- 3
Whisk to froth
Whisk vigorously in a zig-zag motion with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small handheld frother for about 15–30 seconds until the matcha is fully dissolved and a thin layer of froth appears on the surface. If using a spoon or small whisk, whisk energetically to eliminate lumps. Stir in 1 tsp sweetener (or adjust to taste) until dissolved.
Milk
- 4
Heat or chill the milk
For hot latte: heat 400 ml milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming but not boiling (about 60–65°C). For iced latte: keep the 400 ml milk cold in the fridge.
- 5
Froth the milk
Froth the milk to desired texture. Use a milk steamer, handheld frother, or French press to create microfoam for a creamy texture (20–40 seconds). If you want a latte with silky foam, aim for small, dense bubbles rather than large froth.
- 6
Add vanilla (optional)
Stir 1/4 tsp vanilla extract into the milk after frothing if using. This adds a subtle sweetness and depth.
Assembly & Finish
- 7
Combine matcha concentrate and milk
Pour the prepared matcha concentrate into a large (about 16–20 oz / 450–600 ml) serving cup. Slowly pour the frothed milk over the matcha, using a spoon to hold back foam if you prefer a layered effect. For iced: fill the cup with 1 cup ice, pour the matcha concentrate over the ice, then add cold milk and gently stir to combine.
- 8
Garnish
Spoon the remaining milk foam on top if you reserved any. Lightly dust with 1/4 tsp additional matcha powder for visual appeal, if desired.
- 9
Serve
Serve immediately while hot or cold. Stir before drinking to fully combine, and adjust sweetness to taste.
