Method
Espresso
- 1
Preheat and dose
If using an espresso machine, run a blank shot to warm the group head and portafilter. Weigh 18 g of freshly ground espresso into a clean, tamp-ready portafilter. Distribute and tamp evenly to create a level puck.
- 2
Brew espresso
Brew a double shot of espresso (about 60 ml yield) directly into a small, heatproof container or metal pitcher. Aim for a 25–30 second extraction from the moment pump pressure rises; adjust grind if extraction is much faster or slower.
- 3
Chill espresso (optional but recommended)
To preserve crema and cool the espresso quickly, place the container in an ice bath for 30–60 seconds or pour the espresso over a small amount of ice (but avoid over-dilution). You want the espresso cooled enough so it doesn't melt all the ice in the serving cup immediately.
Assembly
- 4
Prepare serving glass
Fill a large serving glass with approximately 1 cup (about 240 ml) of fresh ice cubes, leaving room for espresso and cold water. If you prefer less dilution, use larger ice cubes or coffee ice cubes made from brewed coffee.
- 5
Add cold water
Pour 240 ml of cold filtered water over the ice in the serving glass. This is the base of the iced Americano; adjust the water quantity slightly to taste if you prefer a stronger or weaker drink.
- 6
Combine espresso and water
Pour the cooled double-shot espresso gently over the ice and cold water. Pour slowly to preserve as much crema as possible and to minimize splashing.
- 7
Sweeten (optional)
If you want a sweetened iced Americano, add about 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of simple syrup or liquid sweetener and stir until fully dissolved. Avoid granulated sugar, as it will not dissolve well in cold liquid.
- 8
Finishing
Give the drink a gentle stir with a spoon or straw to combine espresso, water, and any sweetener. Taste and adjust: add a few more ice cubes or a splash more water if too strong, or a small amount more espresso (15–30 ml) if too weak.
