Matcha Concentrate

Method

Matcha Concentrate

  1. 1

    Sift matcha

Place 2 tsp matcha powder into a small fine-mesh sieve over a bowl or measuring cup. Tap or push the powder through to remove clumps for a smoother latte.

  2. 2

    Bloom matcha

Add 120 ml hot water (~175°F / 80°C) to the sifted matcha. Whisk vigorously in a zig-zag or 'W' motion with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small handheld frother for 15–30 seconds until frothy and fully dissolved.

  3. 3

    Sweeten concentrate

Stir in 1 tablespoon granulated sugar or simple syrup into the warm matcha concentrate until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Allow concentrate to cool slightly (2–3 minutes) so it doesn’t melt the ice immediately.

Drink Assembly

  1. 4

    Prepare glass

Fill a large (16–20 oz) serving glass with about 1 cup of ice cubes, leaving space at the top for milk and matcha.

  2. 5

    Add milk and flavoring

Pour 12 oz cold milk over the ice. If using vanilla extract, add 1 tsp now. If you prefer additional sweetness beyond the concentrate, add up to 1 tsp sweetener (simple syrup blends easiest).

  3. 6

    Combine with concentrate

Slowly pour the cooled matcha concentrate over the milk and ice. Pouring slowly creates a layered effect; stir gently with a long spoon or straw to combine completely when ready to drink.

  4. 7

    Finish and serve

Taste and adjust: add more sweetener if desired, stir again, and serve with a straw. Optionally top with a tiny dusting of matcha powder for garnish.
