Method

Brew & cool coffee

  1. 1

    Brew

Brew a strong pot of coffee using double the usual coffee grounds for the same water volume (or use espresso). Measure out 8 fl oz of brewed coffee for one 12 oz drink.

  2. 2

Allow the brewed coffee to cool to room temperature, then place it in the refrigerator for at least 15–20 minutes, or use coffee chilled earlier. Using hot coffee over ice will dilute the drink too much.

Assemble the drink

  1. 3

Fill a 12–16 oz serving glass with 1 cup of ice cubes (about 8–10 medium cubes).

  2. 4

Pour 8 fl oz of the cooled strong coffee over the ice.

  3. 5

Add 1 tablespoon simple syrup (or other liquid sweetener) and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract if using. Stir gently to combine so the sweetener dissolves into the cold coffee.

  4. 6

Pour 4 fl oz (about 1/2 cup) of cold 2% milk over the coffee and stir once to integrate. Adjust milk amount to preference for a lighter or stronger coffee flavor.

Finish & serve

  1. 7

Taste and adjust sweetness or milk. If desired, top with a light sprinkle (about 1 tsp) of ground cinnamon or cocoa powder.

  2. 8

Serve immediately with a straw. The drink yields about one 12 oz serving.
