Espresso

Milk & Ice

Method

Espresso

  1. 1

    Pull espresso

Brew two shots (about 60 ml) of espresso using an espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, prepare 60 ml of very strong brewed coffee or dissolve 2 tsp instant espresso in 30 ml hot water to approximate espresso strength.

  2. 2

    Sweeten espresso (optional)

If you want a sweet iced latte, add the simple syrup (1 tablespoon) directly to the hot espresso while it's fresh so it dissolves completely. If using granulated sugar, stir it into the hot espresso until dissolved.

  3. 3

    Cool slightly

Let the espresso cool for 30–60 seconds so it doesn't immediately melt the ice and dilute the drink excessively.

Assemble

  1. 4

    Prepare glass

Fill a 12 oz serving glass with about 1 cup of ice cubes, leaving room at the top for milk and espresso.

  2. 5

    Add milk

Pour 8 fl oz (about 240 ml) of cold 2% milk over the ice. If you prefer less milk, reduce to 6 fl oz for a stronger coffee flavor.

  3. 6

    Add espresso

Slowly pour the hot (but slightly cooled) espresso over the milk and ice. Pouring slowly over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass helps create a layered look.

  4. 7

    Stir & serve

Stir the drink to combine espresso and milk, or leave layered if you prefer the visual effect and stir as you drink. Taste and adjust sweetness; add more simple syrup if desired.

Finish

  1. 8

    Garnish (optional)

Lightly dust the top with a small pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of cocoa powder or finely ground coffee if desired.

  2. 9

    Serve

Serve immediately with a straw. Best enjoyed cold.
